Mr. Elmo MacDonald Lennard
1925-2017
Mr Lennard was the French teacher for generations of our students. Cool, even-tempered, dispassionate, indulgent, he would deliver nuggets on the intricacies of French grammar, and attempt active reading and simple conversation in class. From the staff room, his booming laugh could be heard spilling out into the corridor. At the end of the day, his tall elegant frame could be seen striding down the steep footpath (replaced by Lute drive in 1959), amongst clusters of small boys running down the hill.
Hailing originally from Sum Sum Hill near Claxton Bay, Mr Lennard attended Naps in the early 1940's. When he graduated, he was offered a position on staff, which became his lifelong career. Quiet, unassuming, always pleasant, he was part of the steady academic structure that made those years memorable to so many staff and students alike.
In Form 3ASp in 1956, Mr Lennard made me write the line below fifty times. I still bemuse French speakers that I happen to meet by reciting it sagely to them.
La langue francaise est l'une des plus belles et des plus interessantes.

Mr Lennard is also remembered as being a decent medium-paced bowler, in his younger days. Hard-working and enthusiastic about his subject area, with a lifelong love for the school and its students, Mr Lennard was truly a "parfait, gentle knight" of the blackboard. Long retired, he had been ailing for some time. He passed away on March 20, 2017 at age 91. Rest in peace, Sir.
